In this crochet video tutorial, I am going to show you how to surface crochet slip stitches on Amigurumi. Surface crochet is a simple technique that allows you to crochet directly onto the surface of your completed Amigurumi piece. This is to create an extra layer of stitches, in our case an extra row of slip stitches.

Surface crochet can be handy for several reason. It can be used to create a decorative detail on your crochet toy such as a sleeve hem or a belt. You can surface crochet a row of slip stitches around the waist of your Amigurumi toy and then start crocheting a skirt into the slip stitches. Or surface crochet a row of slip stitches down the spine of your dinosaur toy and then crochet the spikes into the slip stitches. The possibilities are endless! 🙂
And if you are not a big fan of sewing, you will love this crochet technique because you can surface crochet a row of slip stitches onto one part of your crochet toy and start crocheting the next part of your Ami into the slip stitches. For example, I do this when working on more complex feet. And if you want to see how I do this then check out my free dinosaur crochet pattern.
