How to Crochet Invisible Slip Stitch: Invisible Crochet Seam

This post may contain affiliate links, please read my full disclosure policy for more details.

Are you ready to learn how to crochet invisible slip stitch when working on your crochet projects? This basic technique will help you achieve an invisible crochet seam when working in a round using single crochet stitches.

The traditional way of joining rounds using slip stitches would leave you with an ugly looking seam. But this method is just perfect if you are after a clean finish without visible bumps. And fortunately it’s pretty easy to learn even for beginners!

Difference Between Single Crochet and Double Crochet Invisible Slip Stitch

As much as I wish we could use the same invisible join technique for both single and double crochet stitches, it is sadly not possible. These are in fact two different techniques that vary based on the crochet stitch you are using for your project.

This video tutorial will show you an invisible crochet join in the round when using single crochet stitches. If you would like to learn how to crochet invisible slip stitch when using double crochet stitches, then you can check out this flower coaster video tutorial.

How to Do a Slip Stitch in Amigurumi?

“But Amigurumi is worked in continuous rounds”, I hear you say. And you are absolutely right! I would always recommend crocheting Amigurumi in continuous crochet rounds.

But sometimes it doesn’t hurt to learn something new that will make the little details on your crochet toy look just right. Usually I would use the invisible slip stitch when working on smaller crochet pieces that I would like to be perfectly round or even oval.

Just like the snout on my pig crochet lovey. I was not quite happy with the look of it when I worked in a continous round. So I decided to use the invisible slip stitch and voila, the snout looks perfect. 🙂

  1. finish your crochet round
  2. pull the last loop up a little bit using your crochet hook (Pic 1)
  3. then remove your hook and turn your work over (Pic 2)
  4. place the yarn tail on the wrong side of your crochet piece (Pic 2)
  5. insert your crochet hook into the first stitch of the latest round (Pic 3) – you may want to use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each crochet round so you don’t insert your hook into the wrong stitch

  1. wrap the loop back around the hook and pull on the yarn to make the loop tighter (Pic 4)
  2. then pull the hook with the yarn through the stitch (Pic 5)
  3. try to keep the invisible slip stitch tight because the tighter it is the more invisible the slip stitch join will be and you will not see any bumps
  4. turn your work over back to the right side and place your yarn behind your crochet piece (Pic 6)
  5. to continue with the next round, you will insert your hook into the very same stitch you slip stitched through and will single crochet
  6. you can then continue with the round following your pattern

Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question? Why don’t you search for the answer in the FAQ below.

Can I use worsted weight yarn with your patterns?

Yes, absolutely. My crochet animal patterns work great with a variety of different yarns including worsted weight yarn. Your crochet toy will just be a bit bigger than specified.
However, I wouldn’t use worsted weight yarn for making my loveys as they could feel a bit bulky. I prefer using thinner yarn such as Sport yarn #2 of Light worsted yarn #3 for a nice cuddly feel.
Having said that, my lovey patterns will absolutely work with worsted weight yarn if that’s the type of yarn you prefer using. But bear in mind that your loveys will be a bit bigger than specified in this pattern.
