If you’ve ever made an Amigurumi crochet toy, you know that the smallest details can make the biggest difference. Claws and toes add so much personality to your creations, but embroidering them afterward can be time-consuming. In this video tutorial, I’ll show you how to crochet claws or toes on Amigurumi, giving your crochet animal a clean finish without the extra sewing.

How to Crochet Claws or Toes on Amigurumi – Step by Step
In this video tutorial, you’ll learn how to use puff stitches that I’ve modified slightly to create adorable claws with smooth color changes. I’ll guide you through the process step by step so whether you’re new to Amigurumi or looking to refresh your skills, you’ll be able to follow along with confidence.
By the end, you’ll have a simple method you can use on all your future Amigurumi projects to add those perfect finishing touches.

Follow the below steps to create the perfect crochet claws.
Step 1: Begin the claw round
Start the round where you will add the claws. Single crochet in the next 8 stitches (or follow the stitch count indicated in your pattern).
Step 2: Crochet the first puff stitch (claw)
- Insert your hook into the stitch one round below the next stitch. Wrap the lighter yarn around your hook and pull up a longer loop. Hold the yarn tail at the back of your work with your finger to keep it secure. (Pic 1)
- Next, pull up 4 additional loops while carrying the darker yarn through the puff stitch: yarn over, insert your hook into the same stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. Repeat this step 3 more times. You should now have 10 loops on your hook. (Pic 2)
- Switch to the darker yarn, yarn over and pull through all 10 loops to close the puff stitch. (Pic 3)
- Make a single crochet in the next stitch. This stitch will be partially hidden under the puff stitch, so push the puff stitch aside and insert your hook into the stitch (Pic 4). Yarn over and pull up a loop, then push the puff stitch forward and complete the single crochet behind it (Pic 5).
- Your first claw is now complete. (Pic 6)

Step 3: Space between claws
Single crochet in the next 3 stitches so that you have 4 stitches between claws (or follow your pattern instructions).
Step 4: Second claw
Crochet another puff stitch by repeating the instructions from Step 2.
Step 5: Space between claws
Single crochet in the next 3 stitches, again leaving 4 stitches between claws (or follow your pattern).

Step 6: Final claw
Crochet the last puff stitch following the instructions in Step 2.
Step 7: Finish the round
Complete the round according to the instructions in your pattern.
And that’s it! By crocheting the claws or toes directly onto your crochet toy, you can give your Amigurumi a neat look without the extra step of embroidering afterward. Once you’ve tried this technique, you’ll find it’s easy to adapt to different patterns and crochet animals.

Frequently Asked Questions
Have a question? Why don’t you search for the answer in the FAQ below.
Yes, absolutely. My crochet animal patterns work great with a variety of different yarns including worsted weight yarn. Your crochet toy will just be a bit bigger than specified.
However, I wouldn’t use worsted weight yarn for making my loveys as they could feel a bit bulky. I prefer using thinner yarn such as Sport yarn #2 of Light worsted yarn #3 for a nice cuddly feel.
Having said that, my lovey patterns will absolutely work with worsted weight yarn if that’s the type of yarn you prefer using. But bear in mind that your loveys will be a bit bigger than specified in this pattern.
