In this post, I’ll show you how to crochet ears directly onto Amigurumi. And once you try this technique, you’ll never want to go back to sewing them on! It’s a simple way to make small Amigurumi ears that will make your crochet toy look totally adorable!
I’ll be using my crochet otter in the video to walk you through the simple steps. But honestly, this method will work perfectly on just about any small crochet animal with round little ears. For example, if you’ve ever been curious about how to crochet bear ears, this method has you covered.
This Amigurumi tutorial includes both a full video walkthrough and step by step photos so you can follow along easily.

How to Crochet Ears Directly onto Amigurumi
To get started, make sure to leave six front loops unworked where the ears will go on the top of the animal head (you will need six front loops for each ear). I’ve got one on the side, four in the middle and then one more on the other side (Pic 1). You will then crochet the ears into these front loops.
If you’re using my crochet otter pattern, the instructions will tell you exactly where to do this. If you’re working with a different Amigurumi pattern, just choose where you want the crochet animal ears to go and remember to leave six front loops unworked in that spot.

Crochet Ears Pattern
Follow this step-by-step guide to learn how to crochet ears directly onto Amigurumi. You will be using only basic crochet stitches which makes this crochet technique suitable for all skill levels including crochet beginners.
- insert your crochet hook into the first front loop on the side (Pic 1), wrap the yarn around the hook and pull it through the front loop. You will have to hold the yarn tail in place with your finger to start with so the yarn is not too loose.
- then chain one (Pic 2) and pull on the yarn tail if needed
- make two half double crochets in the second front loop
- make two double crochets in the third front loop (Pic 3) and then in the fourth front loop
- make two half double crochets in the fifth front loop
- finish the ear with a slip stitch in the last front loop on the side (Pic 4)
- weave the yarn ends in (Pic 5) and your crochet Amigurumi ears are completed (Pic 6)

Frequently Asked Questions
Have a question? Why don’t you search for the answer in the FAQ below.
Yes, absolutely. My crochet animal patterns work great with a variety of different yarns including worsted weight yarn. Your crochet toy will just be a bit bigger than specified.
However, I wouldn’t use worsted weight yarn for making my loveys as they could feel a bit bulky. I prefer using thinner yarn such as Sport yarn #2 of Light worsted yarn #3 for a nice cuddly feel.
Having said that, my lovey patterns will absolutely work with worsted weight yarn if that’s the type of yarn you prefer using. But bear in mind that your loveys will be a bit bigger than specified in this pattern.
