Materials and Equipment
You will need the below items before you start making the whiskers on your crochet toys:
- a long piece of embroidery thread yarn – about 20″/50cm – I’m using black color in my tutorial so you can see it better but any color will be fine.
- a few strands of black nylon fishing line (0.4mm or 0.35mm) – about 8″/20cm each – the number of strands needed will depend on how many sets of whiskers you would like to make. If you would like to make three sets of whiskers on each side of the snout then you will need six strands of the fishing line
- tapestry needle/yarn needle
- pins with large heads
- a pair of scissors

Photo Tutorial
Follow the below steps to create the perfect Amigurumi whiskers.
- decide on how many sets of whiskers you would like to make on each side of the snout and use pins with large heads to mark the spots where you would like to attach the whiskers (Pic 1)
- cut a few strands of the fishing line as mentioned earlier and thread your needle with the embroidery yarn
- insert the yarn needle into a stitch somewhere on the bottom of the snout and come out through one of the stitches you marked with the pin at the top of the snout (Pic 2). Make sure you leave a longer tail so you can tie a knot with it.
- then insert your needle into exactly the same stitch at the top of the snout and come out through the corresponding stitch on the other side of the snout. Pull on the yarn but make sure you leave a little loop (Pic 3).
- grab one of the strands of the fishing line and pull it through the loop, fold it roughly in half (Pic 4) and tie a double knot. Don’t worry if the knot is a bit loose, it doesn’t really matter because it will be hidden inside the snout.
- next, pull on the embroidery yarn until the knot you made is hidden inside the snout (Pic 5)
- now, insert the needle into the same stitch your yarn is sticking out of and come out through the second stitch on the other side of the snout (Pic 6). Again leave a little loop (Pic 7).

- grab another strand of the fishing line, pull it through the loop, fold it in half and tie a double knot (Pic 8). Then pull on the embroidery yarn again until the knot is hidden inside the snout (Pic 9). Now you have two sets of whiskers completed (Pic 10).
- repeat the same steps going from one side of the snout to the other
- when making the last set of whiskers, make sure you come out with the needle through the same stitch where you started on the bottom of the snout (Pic 11). You will then be left with two yarn tails sticking out of the same stitch on the bottom of the snout.
- tie a double knot with these two yarn tails and weave the yarn tails in while pulling the knot inside the head
- cut the whiskers shorter and you are done (Pic 12)! The whiskers should be nice and secure, so even if little kids pull on them, they won’t come loose.

And that’s it. Now you know how to add perfect crochet whiskers to your Amigurumi animals! It’s a simple technique, but it really brings your crochet toys to life. I hope you found this helpful and if you try it out, let me know how it went or share a photo. I always love seeing your crochet projects! 🙂

Frequently Asked Questions
Have a question? Why don’t you search for the answer in the FAQ below.
Yes, absolutely. My crochet animal patterns work great with a variety of different yarns including worsted weight yarn. Your crochet toy will just be a bit bigger than specified.
However, I wouldn’t use worsted weight yarn for making my loveys as they could feel a bit bulky. I prefer using thinner yarn such as Sport yarn #2 of Light worsted yarn #3 for a nice cuddly feel.
Having said that, my lovey patterns will absolutely work with worsted weight yarn if that’s the type of yarn you prefer using. But bear in mind that your loveys will be a bit bigger than specified in this pattern.
