If you would like to make yourself a little spiky friend that is still soft to touch and cuddle then try this free crochet hedgehog pattern. And if you are not keen on sewing then you will love this pattern because there is no sewing involved at all!

I have been so eager to design this Amigurumi hedgehog because I am very fond of these cute little creatures! Last year we had one move into our garden so we have been feeding it every night and have become great friends since then. 🙂

Free Crochet Hedgehog Pattern – Notes

Skill level: intermediate crochet skills and knowledge

Finished size – length: 20cm / 8 inches

Finished size – height: 11cm / 4.5 inches

Free Crochet Hedgehog Pattern – Materials and Equipment

Yarn I used for this free crochet hedgehog pattern:

– Fine Sport #2 = 4 ply

– 55% cotton and 45% acrylic blend

– 1x ball of grey yarn – YarnArt Jeans – colour 80 – (50g/160m)

For the spines:

– Light Worsted #3 = DK

– 100% polyester

– 2x ball of black and white yarn – Kingcole Moments eyelash yarn – colour 498 – (50g/90m)

I like to purchase my YarnArt Jeans from Amazon or from Etsy. If you would like to check some great substitutes for YarnArt Jeans then have a read of my Best Yarn for Amigurumi Crochet tutorial. You can find the substitutes towards the end of the article.

Or just simply use any 100% cotton that will work just as well. You can also use 100% acrylic if you prefer to work with this type of yarn.

Other materials used: polyester fibre fill, black thread yarn for toe embroidery, black yarn for nose embroidery

Crochet hook: I used 2.5mm = B/1, if using different weight of yarn then refer to hook size recommendations on the yarn but go one size smaller. I highly recommend this ergonomic crochet hook set from Amazon as it comes in a stylish case and with other accessories such as stitch markers etc.

Other equipment used: scissors, yarn needle, pins with large heads, stitch marker or thin yarn to use instead, 10mm safety eyes

Choking hazard warning: the use of safety eyes or buttons poses a choking risk for children under the age of 3 therefore I recommend using embroidery instead.

R30-R36 (7 rounds): SC in next 9 ST, work in BLO from now on, SC in next 59 ST, stop working in BLO, SC in next 10 ST {78}

You can now place the eyes:

– stuff the head well first

– it helps to use pins with large heads to first mark the spots where the eyes will be placed – you can make a decision whether you are happy with the placement and if it looks symmetrical before you insert the safety eyes; the safety eyes usually make a large hole in between the stitches so it is not recommended to change the placement of the eyes once they are in (Pic H1)

– place the eyes between rounds R13 and R14

– first eye – count 13 stitches from your marker at the start of R13 (count INC as 2 stitches) and place the eye between ST13 and ST14

– second eye – count 24 stitches from your marker at the start of R13 (count INC as 2 stitches) and place the eye between ST24 and ST25

– you can now insert the safety eyes and put the safety backs on (Pic H2)

Sculpting the eyes (indented eye look):

– I didn’t sculpt the eyes but if you wish, you can sculpt them using Method 2 in this step by step video tutorial on How to indent eyes in Amigurumi

– I recommend sculpting the eyes after you have completed the whole body.

Yarn colour: black and white eyelash yarn

How to crochet the spines:

– watch this step by step video tutorial on Easy way how to crochet Amigurumi with eyelash yarn

How to Embroider the Nose and Eye Brows

Nose embroidery:

Embroider the nose using a long piece of black yarn as shown in the photo below.

Eye brow embroidery:

Embroider the eye brows using a long piece of black thread yarn. I embroidered the eye brows between R16 and R17, leaving 11 stitches in between them. Watch this video tutorial on How to embroider nostrils on Amigurumi. In this video, I embroider nostrils but you can use the same technique for embroidering the eye brows.

Hello! Just wanted to say that the patterns amazing! Very easy to follow 😁

    1. Hi Lisbeth, thank you so much for your kind comment! So happy to hear you found the pattern easy to follow! 🙂

      Love,
      Petra x

  2. Lisa Yakalis says:

The pattern for the hedgehog head is off after attaching the ears, the stitch count is not right.

    1. Hi Lisa,

I checked the hedgehog pattern and it is correct. In which row do you think the stitch count is off and would you be able to send me a photo of your hedgehog so I can have a look and try to figure out what’s going on? You can send the photo to info@cuddlystitchescraft.com?

      Love,
      Petra x

  3. I’m sorry, I did like your hedgehog, but there are just too much adds. I have a window of 3cm left and even there all kinds of adds pass by. I’m not even seeing what I am typing now because half of the screen is covered by a temu add.
I much rather buy a pattern if this is how free patterns are published. I actually do buy to avoid this. And I’m not going to pin this page because of all this.

    1. Hi Lenneke, thank you for your comment and I appreciate your honesty. I understand the ads can be a nuisance at times and I am actually looking into it as we speak and planning to reduce the amount of ads to improve your experience on my site. 🙂

      Love, Petra x
