Free Crochet Robin Ornament Pattern: Christmas Amigurumi

If you’ve been itching to make something sweet and festive, this crocheted robin is about to steal your heart. With the European robin being such a classic symbol of Christmas time, I felt inspired to design this free crochet robin ornament pattern to add to my growing collection of crochet Christmas ornaments.

This cute little bird has all the charm of those classic winter scenes we all adore. It reminds me of those soft, handmade decorations my family used to hang every year. This robin Amigurumi has that same warm vibe and making it feels like stepping straight into holiday memories – hot cocoa, twinkle lights and glowing decorations.

How to Crochet a Robin Tree Ornament

– This crochet ornament is worked in continuous rounds so no need to slip stitch to join the rounds. This way you will avoid having a visible seem on your crochet toy.

– Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round.

– All stitches are worked in both loops unless stated otherwise.

– Always use a crochet hook at least one size smaller than the size recommended on the yarn label to avoid large gaps and the stuffing showing.

– The crocheted robin ornament itself is a NO-SEW pattern so all parts of the ornament are crocheted on. You will only need to weave the yarn ends in. If you would like to add the Santa’s hat, then you will need to sew the hat onto the head.

– The use of safety eyes or buttons poses a choking risk for children under the age of 3 therefore I recommend using embroidery instead.

Pattern Notes

Difficulty level: beginner to intermediate

Finished size – using 2.5 mm crochet hook (B/1) and Sport weight yarn (4ply #2):

• height: 8cm (3.25″)
• width: 8cm (3.25″)

Pattern Gauge

Flat crochet circle 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter:

• when using 2.5 mm hook (B/1) and Sport weight yarn (4ply #2)
• 7 rounds with 42 stitches in the last round

Materials and Equipment

Materials needed:

• white thread embroidery yarn for eye details
• string for a hanging loop
• polyester fibre fill

Crochet hook size:

• 2.5 mm crochet hook (B-1) for Sport weight yarn (4ply #2)
• 3 mm crochet hook (C-2) for Light worsted weight yarn (DK #3)
• 3.5 mm crochet hook (E-4) for Worsted weight yarn (Aran #4)
• if using a different weight of yarn then refer to the hook size recommendations on the yarn label but go at least one size smaller

Other equipment needed:

• scissors
• tapestry needle
• stitch marker
• pins with large heads
• 6 mm safety eyes

Pattern Abbreviations

This crochet robin pattern free is written using US terms.

MR: magic ring

CH: chain

ST: stitch

SL ST: slip stitch

SC: single crochet stitch

HDC: half double crochet stitch

DC: double crochet stitch

INC: increase = two single crochet stitches in the same stitch

INV DEC: invisible decrease

BLO: crochet into back loop only

BBO: crochet into back bump only

FL ST: front loop stitch

FO: fasten off

INV FO: invisible fasten off

(…..) x 6: repeat the pattern inside the brackets by the given number (in this example, repeat the pattern in the brackets 6 times)

{…}: number shown inside these brackets equals the number of stitches at the end of each round

Special Stitches

INV DEC: invisible decrease = insert the hook into the front loop of the first stitch (two loops on hook) and immediately insert it again into the front loop of the next stitch (three loops on the hook). Yarn over and draw through the first two loops on the hook (two loops on the hook). Yarn over and draw through the two loops on the hook to finish your invisible decrease

Crochet Robin Ornament Pattern: Step by Step

You can find the free crochet robin ornament pattern below. I have included lots of photos to make it easier for you to follow the detailed instructions. Some sections of the pattern also include step-by-step video tutorials needed for that specific part of the pattern.

Wings

Yarn color: brown yarn

Construction: crochet from the tip of the wing towards the top

R1: MR – 6 x SC into the ring {6} – watch this video tutorial on How to crochet a magic ring

R2: (SC in next ST, INC) x 3 {9}

R3: SC in next ST, INC, (SC in next 2 STs, INC) x 2, SC in next ST {12}

R4: SC in each ST around {12}

R5: (SC in next 3 STs, INC) x 3 {15}

R6: SC in each ST around {15}

R7: Do not stuff and SC the opening together to close the wing {7} – watch this video tutorial on How to close a hole in a flat Amigurumi piece

FO and weave the yarn tail in

Head & Body

Yarn color: brown, orange and cream yarn

Construction: crochet as a ball starting from the top towards the bottom

Start with brown yarn

R1: MR – 6 x SC into the ring {6}

R2: INC in each ST around {12}

R3: (SC in next ST, INC) x 6 {18}

R4: SC in next ST, INC, (SC in next 2 STs, INC) x 5, SC in next ST {24}

R5: (SC in next 3 STs, INC) x 6 {30}

R6: SC in next 2 STs, INC, (SC in next 4 STs, INC) x 5, SC in next 2 STs {36}

R7: (SC in next 5 STs, INC) x 6 {42}

If you wish, you can attach a hanging loop to the ornament at this stage. Use a string or crochet a chain, pull it through the middle of the magic ring and secure it to the inside of the piece so it can’t be pulled out.

R8-R10 (3 rounds): SC in each ST around {42} – leave a stitch marker in at the beginning of R10 as you will need to refer to it when placing the eyes

R11: you’ll attach the wings to the body in this round – watch this video tutorial on How to attach legs to your Amigurumi toy without sewing. I’m attaching legs to the body in this video but you will follow the same technique for attaching the wings.

• SC in next 6 STs
• attach the first wing: SC in next 7 STs – Pic 1 & 2
• SC in next 15 STs
• attach the second wing: SC in next 7 STs
• SC in next 7 STs {42} – Pic 3 & 4 – pull the wings down tight so they don’t point up

You’ll now start using both brown and orange yarn so watch out for the color changes.

BRC = brown color, ORC = orange color

You’ll have 3 unworked front loops that you’ll crochet the beak into later on – Pic 5 & 6

You’ll now continue to crochet with orange yarn only

R15: SC in next ST in BLO, SC in next 39 STs, SC in next 2 STs in BLO {42}

You can now place the safety eyes between rounds R10 and R11:

• 1st eye – count 23 STs from your marker at the start of R10 and place the eye between ST23 and ST24
• 2nd eye – count 17 STs from your marker at the start of R10 and place the eye between ST17 and ST18
• you will have 6 stitches in between the eyes
• put the safety backs on and continue to crochet the body

R16: SC in next ST in BLO, SC in next 4 STs, INV DEC, (SC in next 5 STs, INV DEC) x 5 {36}

After this round you’ll have 6 unworked front loops on the back of the body that you’ll crochet the tail into later on

Change yarn to cream color now

R17: SC in next 2 STs, INV DEC, (SC in next 4 STs, INV DEC) x 5, SC in next 2 STs {30}

R18: (SC in next 3 STs, INV DEC) x 6 {24}

Start stuffing the ornament

R19: SC in next ST, INV DEC in BLO, (SC in next 2 STs, INV DEC in BLO) x 5, SC in next ST {18}

R20: (SC in next ST, INV DEC) x 6 {12}

R21: SC in each ST around {12}

Stuff well, FO closing the hole using a yarn needle and weave the yarn tail in

Beak

Yarn color: yellow yarn

Construction: you will crochet the beak into the 3 unworked front loop stitches of R11

Step 1: Hold the robin upside down

Step 2: Insert your hook into the first front loop stitch of R11- Pic 7

Step 3: Wrap the yarn around the hook and pull through the front loop stitch – secure the yarn tail with your finger

Step 4: Chain 1 – Pic 8

Step 5: HDC, DC, HDC into the second front loop stitch – Pic 9

Step 6: Slip stitch into the last front loop stitch – Pic 10

Step 7: Cut the yarn off, pull it out of the loop and weave the yarn ends in – Pic 11 & 12

Tail

Yarn color: brown yarn

Construction: you will crochet the tail into the 6 unworked front loop stitches on the back of the body

Step 1: Insert your hook into the first front loop stitch of R13 – Pic 13

Step 2: Wrap the yarn around the hook and pull through the front loop stitch – secure the yarn tail with your finger and chain 10 – Pic 14

Step 3: SL ST into the next FL ST – that’s the first loop of the tail done – Pic 15

Step 4: CH 10 and SL ST into the next FL ST – that’s the second loop done – Pic 16

Step 5: CH 10 and SL ST into the next FL ST in the next row – Pic 17

Step 6: Repeat until you reach the last front loop stitch – SL ST in the last FL ST, CH 10 and SL ST into the very first FL ST where you started – you should have 6 loops in total

Step 7: Cut the yarn off, pull it out of the loop and weave the yarn ends in – Pic 18

Santa’s Hat

Yarn color: red and white yarn

Construction: you will crochet the hat from the top towards the brim

R1: MR – 6 x SC into the ring {6}

R2: (SC in next ST, INC) x 3 {9}

R3-R4 (2 rounds): SC in each ST around {9}

R5: SC in next ST, INC, (SC in next 2 STs, INC) x 2, SC in next ST {12}

R6-R8 (3 rounds): SC in each ST around {12}

R9: (SC in next 3 STs, INC) x 3 {15}

R10: SC in each ST around {15}

R11: SC in next 2 STs, INC, (SC in next 4 STs, INC) x 2, SC in next 2 STs {18}

R12: SC in each ST around {18}

R13: (SC in next 5 STs, INC) x 3 {21}

R14: SC in next 3 STs, INC, (SC in next 6 STs, INC) x 2, SC in next 3 STs {24}

R15: (SC in next 7 STs, INC) x 3 {27}

R16: SC in next 4 STs, INC, (SC in next 8 STs, INC) x 2, SC in next 4 STs {30}

Change yarn to white color

R17: (SC in next 9 STs, INC) x 3 {33} – crochet this round loosely because it will be easier to crochet into the BBO in R18

You will now continue to crochet the brim

R19: SL ST in each ST around in BBO {33}

INV FO and leave a long tail for sewing – watch this video tutorial on How to fasten off: Invisible Finish. No need to stuff the hat at this stage, you will stuff it when sewing it on.

Attach a white pom pom to the top of the hat with a few stitches – fold the top of the hat and secure it to the side with a few stitches so the hat stays folded.

Eye embroidery

Embroider the eye details using some white thread embroidery yarn.

Assembly

Sew the hat to the side of the head while adding some stuffing. Don’t forget to pull the hanging loop through the hat while sewing it on.
