Free Crochet Panda Pattern: Low-Sew Amigurumi Panda Bear

This post may contain affiliate links, please read my full disclosure policy for more details.

This free crochet panda pattern is another of my designs where I have reduced the amount of sewing. I’m sure you will love it because the only parts that will need sewing on are the eye patches and the head! And if you want to take it a step further then you can even glue the eye patches on with a fabric glue or a hot glue gun. The choice is yours! 🙂

And as always, there are step-by-step video tutorials available throughout different sections of the pattern to guide you through it.

Why You Will Love this Pattern!

  • Low-sew: all you need to sew on is the head and the eye patches
  • All you need to know is basic crochet stitches
  • Works great with a variety of different yarns including worsted weight yarn
  • Easy-to-follow instructions with step by step photos
  • Includes detailed video tutorials for extra help
  • I’m always happy to provide support with this pattern
  • And more importantly…you will have fun making a beautiful gift for your little one or family and friends

If you follow my blog, then you know that I sometimes like to experiment with colors. This time I decided to use navy blue instead of black yarn for my cute panda bear. And I hope you love it as much as I do! Don’t forget to let me know. 🙂

How to Crochet a Panda

  • This free crochet panda pattern is worked in continuous rounds so no need to slip stitch to join the rounds. This way you will avoid having a visible seem on your crochet toy.
  • Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round.
  • All stitches are worked in both loops unless stated otherwise.
  • I always recommend using the invisible decrease that will give you a nicer finish without visible bumps and gaps. Refer to the ‘special stitches’ section.
  • Always use a crochet hook at least one size smaller than the size recommended on the yarn label to avoid large gaps and the stuffing showing.
  • This free crochet panda pattern requires minimal sewing at assembly. The arms, legs, tail and ears are attached to the body without sewing. You will only need to sew on the head and the eye patches.
  • The use of safety eyes or buttons poses a choking risk for children under the age of 3 therefore I recommend using embroidery instead.

– thread a tapestry needle with the same navy blue yarn you used to make the ears

– place the needle inside the head and come out through a stitch behind the centre of the ear (Pic 5)

– now pull the needle through a stitch on the back of the ear (somewhere in the middle of the second row from the bottom) (Pic 6)

– and then insert the needle into a stitch next to the one you pulled the needle through behind the ear (Pic 7)

– pull all the way through and come out on the inside of the head

– pull very tight and tie a double knot on the inside of the head (Pic 8)

You can now place the eyes and the eye patches:

– stuff the head well first

– it helps to use pins with large heads to first mark the spots where the eyes will be placed – you can make a decision whether you are happy with the placement and if it looks symmetrical before you insert the safety eyes; the safety eyes usually make a large hole in between the stitches so it is not recommended to change the placement of the eyes once they are in (Pic 9)

– place the eyes between rounds R14 and R15

– first eye – count 9 stitches from your marker at the start of R14 and place the eye between ST9 and ST10

– second eye – count 25 stitches from your marker at the start of R14 and place the eye between ST25 and ST26

– you can now insert the safety eyes with the eye patches to make sure you are happy with the look. But do not put the safety backs on yet (Pic 10)

Free Crochet Panda Pattern, Easy Amigurumi Panda Bear Pattern

Sculpting the eyes (indented eye look):

– watch this step by step video tutorial on How to indent eyes in Amigurumi

– take a long piece of white yarn and thread your needle

– remove the left eye and patch and insert the needle in a stitch next to the left eye hole (Pic 11)

– remove the right eye and patch and come across the side with the needle and insert it into a stitch next to the right eye hole (Pic 12); pull all the way through till the yarn tail is not showing

– insert the needle into another stitch next to the right eye and come across the side with the needle again (Pic 13)

– repeat the process back and forth between the two eye holes while pulling on the yarn tightly each time you come across the side

– you will need to repeat this about three times until you achieve the indented eye look you want and then you can weave the yarn in (Pic 14)

– place the eyes and patches back in the holes; remove some or most of the stuffing and place the safety backs on making sure they snap in place tightly

– you can now re-stuff the head and continue crocheting R34

– continue to stuff the head gradually

R34: SC in next 2 STs, INV DEC, (SC in next 4 STs, INV DEC) x 5, SC in next 2 STs {30}

R35: (SC in next 3 STs, INV DEC) x 6 {24}

R36: SC in next ST, INV DEC, (SC in next 2 STs, INV DEC) x 5, SC in next ST {18}

R37: (SC in next ST, INV DEC) x 6 {12}

R38: SC in each ST around {12}

Stuff well, close the hole using a tapestry needle and weave the yarn end in.

You can now sew on the eye patches. I attached them between R10 and R19 at about a 45° angle.

Nose Embroidery

– embroider the nose using a long piece of black yarn – about 90 cm / 35.5 inches long

– mark the shape and placement of the nose with pins first before you start embroidering (Pic 15)

– I embroidered the nose between R4 and R7 of the head; leaving 5 stitches between the pins at the top and 3 stitches between the pins at the bottom (Pic 16)

How to Assemble Your Crochet Panda Softie

Attaching the head to the panda’s body: Pin the head to the body first making sure that the head is in the centre from the front and back (Pic 23 & 24). Sew the head to the body while adding more stuffing so the head is not wobbly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question? Why don’t you search for the answer in the FAQ below.

Can I use worsted weight yarn with your patterns?

Yes, absolutely. My crochet animal patterns work great with a variety of different yarns including worsted weight yarn. Your crochet toy will just be a bit bigger than specified.
However, I wouldn’t use worsted weight yarn for making my loveys as they could feel a bit bulky. I prefer using thinner yarn such as Sport yarn #2 of Light worsted yarn #3 for a nice cuddly feel.
Having said that, my lovey patterns will absolutely work with worsted weight yarn if that’s the type of yarn you prefer using. But bear in mind that your loveys will be a bit bigger than specified in this pattern.
